Historic BriSCA F1 Weekend Makes Motorsport History

Nutts Corner Raceway welcomed one of the biggest events ever staged in Northern Ireland oval racing over the weekend as BriSCA F1 Stock Cars raced in Ireland for the very first time in a landmark meeting hosted in conjunction with Yorstox Promotions.

The major two-day event marked not only the first appearance of BriSCA F1 Stock Cars in Northern Ireland, but also the first ever BriSCA F1 event held anywhere on the island of Ireland. Teams and supporters travelled from across the United Kingdom and Ireland for the occasion, creating a tremendous atmosphere throughout the weekend both on and off track.

Saturday’s BriSCA F1 action immediately produced a piece of history as Ant Whorton-Eales won the opening ever BriSCA F1 race staged in Ireland. Driving the 408 machine, Whorton-Eales headed home Brooke Kitson and former British Champion Paul Hines in the A&B Heat after a superb opening contest.

Henry Robson then claimed victory in Heat 2 ahead of Callum Thornton and reigning World Champion Tom Harris, before Harris responded in Heat 3 by taking victory ahead of Thornton and Hines.

The Irish Open Championship Final proved one of the highlights of the weekend as Joshua Spiers raced to a memorable victory ahead of Henry Robson and Lewis Hunter, whilst Ant Whorton-Eales narrowly missed the podium after another strong performance in fourth.

Saturday evening concluded with a spectacular BriSCA F1 Grand National which rounded off an unforgettable opening day of racing. Ant Whorton-Eales completed a remarkable evening by securing his second win of the meeting ahead of Tom Harris and Catherine Harris.

The BriSCA F2 Stock Cars also produced excellent racing throughout Saturday’s packed programme which consisted of a National Championship race, three qualifying heats for Sunday’s Irish Open Championship and the Trevor Moore Memorial Final.

The National Championship race was decided by public draw and provided a superb start to the F2 action, with Aidan Grindy in 355 taking victory ahead of Chris Burgoyne and Aaron Vaight.

Drivers were then split across three qualifying heats as the battle for Irish Open Championship points intensified throughout the afternoon. Mika Millar claimed victory in Heat One ahead of Aidan Grindy and Dylan Fegan, whilst Heat Two saw Daniel Stewart take the chequered flag ahead of Mason Whittle and Tom Bennett.

The final qualifier went the way of Gavin Fegan ahead of Dylan Fegan and Jack Woodhull, with reigning World Champion Gordon Moodie also featuring strongly throughout the afternoon’s racing.

Saturday evening’s Trevor Moore Memorial Final provided a fitting tribute to the much-missed Northern Ireland driver, with Tom Bennett producing an excellent drive to take victory ahead of Jason McDonald and Gordon Moodie. Ryan McCrory and Mika Millar completed the top five finishers in the prestigious memorial event.

National Ministox made their Nutts Corner Raceway debut during the historic weekend and quickly became one of the standout attractions thanks to their fast, competitive racing and impressive driving standards from the young competitors.

Finley Kew won the opening heat ahead of Freddie Nunn and Alfie Smith before local driver Leyton Hughes delighted the home crowd with victory in Heat Two ahead of Charlie Key. Key then responded by winning Heat Three ahead of Hughes and Kaykub Scriven.

The Final arguably produced one of the races of the entire weekend. A huge opening bend crash eliminated several cars, including local favourite Leyton Hughes, before the remaining drivers produced a tremendous battle for the leading positions following the restart. In the end John Teddy Foster in 882 emerged victorious ahead of Finley Kew and Ruben Hardwick after a fantastic race from start to finish.

The local interest within the formula added further significance to the occasion, with Northern Ireland youngsters Leyton Hughes, Caolan Fegan and Jack Morrison all competing in hire cars during the first ever BriSCA F1 Stock Car event staged in Ireland.

The Classic Stock Cars added a nostalgic touch to the weekend and proved popular with spectators throughout their appearances. Gary Tressler claimed victory in the opening heat ahead of Mark Wareham and Geoff Forster before Wareham won Heat Two ahead of Andrew Baldry and Forster.

The meeting Final then saw Andrew Baldry take victory ahead of Colin Crossland and Ashleigh Wareham to complete the Classic Stock Car programme.
