Elliot strikes on last bend to claim Irish Open crown

The 1300 Stock Cars were the headline act at Sunday’s Nutts Corner Raceway meeting, as they contested their Irish Open Championship.

The locals were joined on track by drivers from all corners of the UK including the newly crowned National Champion Jake Banwell.

It was local man William Stewart who romped to victory in both the heat events with Scotland’s Ally Strachan second both times.

With the points tallied, Stewart was the pole sitter for the showdown with Strachan alongside while England’s Jack Roff and Rathfriland’s Ivan Elliot menacingly occupied row two. As the race got underway it wasn’t long until Roff and Elliot overcome the front row men to take up the running. Roff looked well in command with Elliot a safe second while there was plenty of place swapping going on behind. As the race neared its conclusion Elliot edged closer and closer to the leading Roff. As they entered turn 3 for the final time Elliot launched a well calculated assault moving Roff aside. Elliot nipped ahead to take the win with Roff the gallant runner up, joining them on the podium was Irish Champion Chris Hamill.
