O’Dell secures Irish Open title on last bend swoop!

A fantastic entry of 2L Saloon Stock Cars assembled at NuttsCorner Raceway to do battle for the prestigious Irish Open title on day number one of the speedweekend. A two third format was used with each of the drivers contesting two out of three heats, to gain points for the final grid. There was a cosmopolitan feel to proceedings with drivers from all corners of the UK in attendance as well as the addition of Jeremy Van De Kraats, all the way from the Netherlands.
The heat races offered up plenty of rough and tumble saloon action, with three different winners emerging. Adam O’Dell got off to a flying start with victory in heat one before the Scottish stars Ian McLaughlin and Ally Strachan shared the remaining heat victories.
With a first and second place finish apiece, O’Dell and McLaughlin were the front row starters in the feature race with Tam Rutherford and Graeme Shevill next in tow. The title race was a somewhat robust affair in gold old hard hitting Stock Car fashion. There were separate battles taking place right through the field while McLaughlin and O’Dell were in command throughout. As the race headed towards its conclusion a fantastic exchange of blows took place between Deane Mayes, Kieran McIvor, Shevill, Ryan Wright, Ross Watters and Brad Compton Sage. McLaughlin still headed the field as the last lap marker appeared with O’Dell close behind; O’Dell issued a final bend lunge on McLaughlin which allowed him through to take the glory. McLaughlin was the gallant runner up with Mayes a fine third. Another final bend reshuffle between Shevill, Wright, McIvor, Sage and company settled the minor placing’s.

Yokohama title for Harper
The ORCi Stock Rod Yokohama title was up for grabs with a decent entry of cars in action, including three of the McGill clan from Scotland.
The current European Champion Raymond Harper was the first to taste glory when he romped to a good victory in heat one. Heat two seen the cars line up in reverse order to the opening challenge, this time around it was local ace Sam McKinstry who took the win. Come the title race Harper was again the pace setter pulling well clear of the pack. A low finish in heat two resulted in a poor starting position for the World Champion Lee McGill however he was able to battle his way through the field for an impressive runner up finish ahead of the heat two winner McKinstry.

Saturday Support Formula Round Up

Also in action on Saturday evening was the Brisca F2 Stock Cars, Junior Rods and 1300 Stock Cars.
The F2 Stock Cars witnessed a hike in numbers with several drivers making their first appearance of 2019. Star name Craig McConnell was the double heat winner before mechanical dramas side-lined him early in the meeting final. Mazzy McCreight showed fantastic pace to take the feature final win ahead of Curtis Greer and Mark Rainey.
The Junior Rods were on hand to provide some non-contact racing. Jason McMullan and Chris Cardwell shared the heat wins before Jack Morrow bounced back from two unlucky heats to take the final silverware. Odhrann McGeown navigated his superbly turned out Vauxhall Corsa to the runner up spot with Ballymena’s Cole McFall third.
Completing the busy race card was the 1300 Stock Cars with a showing well into the double figures. Lee topping enjoyed victories in both heats’s before Jamie McCann took charge to pick up the final win, local ace Joshua McKinstry blasted through from the star grade to take second spot ahead of Nicky Lowry.
